What are “Tesla Cells”?

The “AA” sized 18650 cells that are typically used in eBike batteries have currently reached theoretical max capacity, so we originally looked to Tesla batteries for our KILO.WATT 52V 20Ah soft-pack batteries.

The high demand for more energy density in LiOn battereis means that other manufacturers than Tesla are now developing cells with the same performance. “Tesla Cells” has become a generic term for the bigger 2170 cells, even though they are now being manufactured by Panasonic among others.

Since the 2170 cells are bigger, they wont’ be able to fit inside the aluminium cabinet typically used on the DCH-009 frame battery (typically seen on MATE X, Egwe, VAYA and similar e-fatbike models.). In order to reach the 20Ah capacity, the DCH-09 battery head is attached to a vinyl wrapped battery pack, hence the term “soft pack”.
